On February 3, 1890, the Hijala Mela was started at the time of the then British District Magistrate John Roberts Casteres. It is believed that the fair was started with the aim of understanding local traditions, customs and social regulation and to communicate directly to the local people. In the same context, the word “Hijala” is also derived from “His Laws”. There is also a belief that the Hijala Mela has been named on the basis of local village Hijla. In the year 1975, the Tribal word was added to the Hijala Mela on the initiative of Shri G.R. Patwardhan, then the then Commissioner of Shanti Parghana. The Jharkhand government decided to commemorate this fair as a festival since 2008 and in 2015, this fair was given the status of the state fair, after which this fair is known as “State Tribal Hijala Mela Festival”.
Generally this fair is celebrated in the Shukla side of Magh-Phalgun. By this time, rural farmers are free from the work and remains in the mood of celebration. In the context of the Sohrai festival, the rich cultural heritage of the entire region is reflected in the whole of the world with its consistency. This fair not only represents the wonderful coordination of the tribal communities but the common heritage of local non-tribal communities.
